Speculoos or Speculaas spice is a fragrant blend of ground cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper. The result is a traditional Dutch shortcake spice which is excellent for baking at any time of year. The origin of the word is not certain, but some say that “speculoos” comes from the word “specerij,” which means “spice” in Dutch. We source our Speculoos from a small spice merchant locally to us in Warwickshire.
